David Crystal investiga la naturaleza del impacto que Internet está teniendo sobre el lenguaje. Ya hay un mito popular muy extendido sobre que Internet va a perjudicar al lenguaje, que el tecnohabla se impondrá, se olvidarán las normas y la creatividad disminuirá. La tesis de Crystal es la contraria: que Internet está haciendo posible una impresionante expansión para ocupar un lugar como categoría del lenguaje, y que está ofreciendo oportunidades sin precedentes para la creatividad personal. Al mismo tiempo, para crecer y que se mantenga como un medio lingüístico, Internet debe desarrollar sus propios principios y normas, que serán muy diferentes de las que se encuentran en otros medios.
